In 1963, the entire group backed up Clifton on as series of recordings. Most of the material was released on Starday or their subsidiary label, Nashville Records. The most significant song from these sessions was "Bringing Mary Home". When the Gentlemen first heard the song, they also wanted to record it and they struck up a deal that Bill Clifton would record it first.

After a year, the Gentlemen would record it. The Clifton version was somehow lost in the shuffle whel the Gentlemen version went on to make bluegrass history.
